Sixteen persons with disabilities in the Ketu North Municipality have received various forms of government support aimed at improving their livelihoods, mobility and economic independence.
The items were presented during a ceremony held at the Ketu North Municipal Assembly in Dzodze on Tuesday, 11th August 2026.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Martin Amenakey, explained that the initiative forms part of efforts to support persons with disabilities in accordance with the 1992 Constitution, which provides for the allocation of five percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund to support persons with disabilities.
According to Hon. Amenakey, beneficiaries were selected based on applications received and after undergoing interviews to assess their needs.
“Per the applications received, we have supported some groups of persons with disabilities over the past months after thorough interviews,” he stated.
The beneficiaries received a range of equipment and livelihood support, including keys to three metal containers equipped with knitting machines, barbering equipment and radiator repair kits.
Other items presented were two mobile cassava-grating machines, one installed corn mill machine, three industrial sewing machines, one hair dryer with tray sets, one tricycle motorbike, two specially designed tricycles for mobility, two laptops with stationery and a set of farm inputs for crop cultivation.
The presentation ceremony was marked by excitement and appreciation as beneficiaries received the items intended to support their businesses and daily activities.
Speaking in an interview with Fafaa Radio, Mr. Richard Deapeamekpor, one of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the mobility support he received.
He explained that moving around had previously been difficult because of his condition, but said the specially designed motorbike would significantly improve his mobility.
“I found it very difficult to move around in my wheelchair. But today I have received a specially designed motorbike that will help me move around easily,” he said.
Mr. Deapeamekpor expressed appreciation to the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Hon. Edem Agbana, the Department of Social Welfare, the Ketu North Municipal Assembly and the MCE, Hon. Martin Amenakey, for their support.
Another beneficiary, Mr. Wisdom Etsey Nyatuame, said he received a commercial tricycle which he intends to use to support his business.
“This will help me manage my business and improve the standard of living for myself and my family as a person with disability,” he stated.
He encouraged other persons with disabilities in the municipality to take advantage of future opportunities by applying for similar support programmes.
The intervention is expected to provide beneficiaries with greater opportunities to engage in income-generating activities while also addressing some of the mobility challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
The presentation further highlights the importance of inclusive development and continued support for persons with disabilities within the Ketu North Municipality.
