Residents, family heads and community stakeholders in Adrume Hormeglobo in the Ketu North Municipality have expressed concern following reports of an alleged grave desecration at the community cemetery.
The incident reportedly came to light after unusual footpaths were traced from an alleged illegal sand-winning site in a nearby bush to a particular grave that appeared to have been disturbed.
According to eyewitnesses, the grave showed signs of digging, raising concerns among residents about who may be responsible and the motive behind the alleged act.
Speaking to the media, community elder Elder Isaac Awayigah said he noticed the disturbed grave and expressed concern over the incident.
“We don’t know who did this or what they intend to do with the dead human bodies after looting them. We are afraid,” he stated.
Elder Awayigah urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around the cemetery, particularly during the night.
He also appealed to the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Hon. Edem Agbana, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Martin Amenakey, to consider extending electricity to the cemetery.
According to him, providing adequate lighting around the cemetery would improve visibility at night and could help deter individuals from engaging in unlawful activities in the area.
In an interview with Fafaa Radio, Mr. Kudzo Wuashie said the incident had been reported to the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Hope Detikey.
He added that the matter would also be reported to the Ghana Police Service to enable the appropriate authorities to investigate the incident and, if possible, identify and apprehend those responsible.
The alleged desecration has reportedly left some residents disturbed and concerned about visiting the cemetery to mourn and honour their deceased relatives.
Family heads and community members have described the alleged incident as a serious concern, noting that interference with burial grounds is regarded as a grave cultural violation and could also raise health and security concerns.
Residents fear that failure to address the situation promptly could encourage similar incidents and undermine confidence in the security of the community cemetery.
Community leaders are therefore calling on the Ketu North Municipal Assembly, security agencies and traditional authorities to take urgent steps to improve security around the cemetery and investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged grave desecration.
