A traditional ruler in the Weta Traditional Area, of Ketu North , in the Volta Region, Torgbui Ashiagbor IV, has expressed deep concern over the loss of development projects in the area due to persistent chieftaincy disputes. He said the prolonged misunderstanding among traditional leaders has slowed down progress and deprived the community of several important initiatives.
Speaking on Fafaa 100.3 FM during the Duamenefa Programme hosted by Mr. Emmanuel Ketaman Evortepe, the Executive President of the Duamenefa Foundation, Torgbi Ashiagbor IV lamented that the conflicts have created divisions that are now affecting every aspect of community life.
According to the traditional ruler, the chieftaincy dispute has brought disunity among the people of Weta, leading to missed opportunities for growth and development. He revealed that the disagreements have even affected cultural events such as the recent Morluza Festival, which was reportedly celebrated in two separate factions due to the ongoing disputes.
Torgbui Ashiagbor IV explained that because of the lack of harmony, many development partners and organizations find it difficult to invest in the community. He said acquiring land for development purposes has become challenging, as disputes over ownership and authority often arise among the rival factions.
Citing specific examples, he mentioned that a proposal from Hon. Edem Agbana to construct a police station in Weta has stalled because of the leadership impasse. He added that an NGO that had planned to build a modern ICT centre in the community was forced to relocate the project to another area, depriving the youth of vital digital learning opportunities.
Torgbui Ashiagbor IV also appealed to the Duamenefa Foundation, acknowledging the organization’s proven record in conflict resolution. He stated that he believes in their ability to intervene and help restore peace in the Weta Traditional Area.
In response, Mr. Emmanuel Ketaman Evortepe, the Executive President of the Duamenefa Foundation, assured that God will intervene and the dispute will eventually come to an end. He urged residents to respect the law and to seek legal redress whenever they feel wronged, rather than taking matters into their own hands. Mr. Ketaman also disclosed that a number of high-profile personalities hail from the Weta Traditional Area, including His Eminence Dr. Gabriel Kwamigah Tanko Atokple, the Council of State member representing the Volta Region. He emphasized that residents should respect the law so that the reputations of these prominent figures remain intact and so that they can continue to bring development projects to the community.
