The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has announced that its members will embark on a nationwide withdrawal of services following months of neglect and unfair treatment.
In a statement, the Association said over 200 junior doctors have worked for 10 to 14 months without receiving salaries.
It also alleged that several medical officers previously on payroll have had their salaries “stopped without explanation,” while more than 800 medical officers have been awaiting posting for over a year.
“Despite repeated engagements with authorities and goodwill shown towards the government, no solutions have been offered,” the statement said.
The Association has directed its members to suspend outpatient services from Tuesday, October 7, to Thursday, October 9.
It further ordered that “emergency services [will be withdrawn] effective Friday, October 10 until further notice,” but clarified that inpatients will continue to be managed until discharge, while no new cases will be admitted.
“The continued exploitation of junior doctors will no longer be tolerated,” the statement added. It emphasised that responsibility for any disruption in healthcare delivery “lies squarely with the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana.”
The JDA-GH called on all stakeholders to act urgently to resolve the issues. “We call on all stakeholders to act immediately to resolve these issues,” it said.
