ECG busts 700 illegal meters in Ketu South, replaces 300

Mr Ebenezer Baiden, an Energy Economist at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has expressed concern about the
increasing number of meters installed in homes that do not belong to ECG.

He revealed that ECG had identified over 700 illegal meters in various homes across the Ketu South Municipality and had so far replaced about 300of them with approved ECG meters.

Speaking at a public engagement forum between ECG management and aggrieved customers from Aflao and Denu, Mr Baiden described the situation as the major source of customer challenges including wrong billing and system faults.

He encouraged customers to report any person installing or operating unauthorized meters, as ECG was strengthening its monitoring team to inspect all meters within the Municipality to ensure safety and proper billing.

For several months, ECG customers in the Ketu South Municipality have raised concerns over overbilling, faulty transformers, unresponsive customer service, and other service-related challenges.

Mr Baiden advised customers, whose meters were not ready for billing, to visit any ECG office for quick assistance.

He explained that ECG workers were expected to visit homes every month to read the meters for accurate billing.

Mr Baiden said in situations where ECG staff could not access a meter or failed to visit a particular home, customers were responsible for reporting the issue to the nearest ECG office for correction.

He disclosed that ECG had now secured a large stock of new meters, allowing households that needed meters to apply without delay, adding that any person who would not receive a meter after three months of application should return to the ECG district office to lodge a formal complaint.
