The Executive President of the Duamenefa Foundation, Mr. Ketaman Emmanuel Evortepe, has expressed concern about what he describes as a growing departure from the traditional values and principles associated with voodoo worship and practice.
He made the remarks during a live interview on Fafaa 100.3 FM as part of the Duamenefa Social Intervention Programme.
According to Mr. Evortepe, developments within some aspects of contemporary voodoo practice have become troubling and increasingly difficult to reconcile with its traditional foundations. He noted that these changes have created uncertainty among both practitioners and observers, making the belief system appear different from its original spiritual and cultural purpose.
He explained that, historically, voodoo was regarded by many communities as a spiritual system used for protection, healing, and the safeguarding of societies during periods of conflict. However, he alleged that some individuals are now using such practices in ways that cause harm to others, a trend he believes represents a departure from the original intent of the tradition.
Mr. Evortepe further observed that minor disagreements between individuals are sometimes escalated through the invocation of spiritual forces, a development he described as unfortunate. According to him, such actions contribute to fear, tension, and misunderstanding within communities.
He also expressed concern about the impact of these practices on family relationships. He claimed that there have been instances where spouses, siblings, and other relatives allegedly resort to spiritual means against one another, creating an atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust within families.
According to him, these developments weaken social cohesion and undermine the values of unity and mutual respect that are essential for peaceful coexistence. He stressed that when spiritual practices become associated with interpersonal conflicts, they can deepen divisions and fuel community tensions.
Mr. Evortepe further linked the issue to what he described as the increasing commercialization of spiritual practices. He argued that the pursuit of personal gain by some individuals has contributed to the erosion of respect for traditional systems and encouraged practices that differ from their original teachings.
He also highlighted misinformation and inadequate education about indigenous belief systems as contributing factors. According to him, many young people are exposed to distorted narratives that create confusion about the true purpose and significance of traditional spiritual practices.
The Duamenefa Foundation President called for greater community engagement and public education on indigenous cultural and spiritual traditions. He urged elders and custodians of tradition to take a more active role in guiding younger generations and preserving the integrity of these practices.
He further advocated for increased dialogue between traditional and religious leaders as a means of reducing misunderstandings and promoting peaceful coexistence among people of different beliefs.
Mr. Evortepe appealed to practitioners of voodoo and other traditional belief systems to exercise responsibility in their practices and refrain from actions that may harm others. He warned that the continued misuse of spiritual practices could negatively affect relationships and social harmony.
He stated that the Duamenefa Foundation remains committed to interventions aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals and promoting peace within communities. Although rooted in Christian values, he said the foundation’s work focuses on supporting people from all backgrounds who may require protection from fear, harm, or abuse.
Mr. Evortepe also called on traditional rulers to ensure that practitioners operate within accepted customary norms and regulations. He emphasized that traditional authorities, as custodians of cultural heritage and spiritual institutions, play a vital role in maintaining order and preserving the integrity of indigenous practices.
Additionally, he urged relevant state institutions to intensify public education on traditional and spiritual matters. According to him, greater awareness and understanding would help reduce misconceptions, prevent abuse, and encourage peaceful coexistence among Ghana’s diverse religious and cultural communities.
