Man Bedridden for Nine Years Dies Amid Duamenefa Foundation Investigation into alleged spiritual attacks

Husunu Dawukpor Semagbe, of Ehie Dziehegbleta, in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region, who had been bedridden for nine years following alleged spiritual attacks by his senior brother, Midao, Soglohu Apedo has died while an investigation by the Duamenefa Foundation into his condition was still ongoing.

The deceased had long been at the centre of claims linking his prolonged illness to spiritual causes, prompting the Foundation to look into the circumstances surrounding his health situation. His passing occurred before the investigation could be fully concluded.

Husunu Dawukpor petitioned the Duamenefa Foundation, stating that he had been sick and bedridden for nine years and alleging that his brother, Midawo Gaglohu, was responsible for his condition. According to him, consultation with the oracles through Ifa divination revealed the name of his brother as being linked to his illness.

After receiving the petition, the Duamenefa Foundation engaged Midawo Gaglohu to respond to the allegations. In an interaction with Mr. Ketaman Emmanuel Evortepe, he stated that his brother had insulted him on several occasions, and as a result of their disputes, he allegedly invoked the ancestral spirits against him.

Following these accounts, the Foundation commenced investigations with the aim of establishing the facts and, importantly, helping to save a life given the critical condition of the complainant.

During the investigation, Husunu Dawukpor’s condition reportedly deteriorated to the extent that he was unable to speak directly to the Foundation. His wife therefore became the primary channel of communication, speaking on his behalf regarding his health and concerns.

However, at a later stage, he reportedly requested to speak directly with the Foundation, stating that he felt it was important to express himself personally as he believed it could be his final opportunity. The Foundation granted his request, and he was eventually able to share his account.

Unfortunately, information later reached the Foundation that Husunu Dawukpor had passed on. This was confirmed by his wife during an interview on the airwaves of Fafaa 100.3 FM as part of the Duamenefa Foundation’s social intervention programme. In an interaction with Mr. Ketaman Emmanuel Evortepe, the Executive President of the Foundation, she confirmed the sad news of his death.

Mr. Ketaman Emmanuel Evortepe, on behalf of the Duamenefa Foundation, extended his condolences to the bereaved family for the unfortunate loss. He expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with them during this difficult period.

He further used the opportunity to advise the general public to be prompt in bringing petitions to the attention of the Foundation, especially in situations where individuals are critically ill, so that investigations can begin early enough to potentially save lives. He cautioned against delaying petitions until victims are in very severe or bedridden conditions, stressing that early reporting can improve the chances of timely intervention.

Public reaction to the incident has been mixed, with some members of the community expressing concern about the timing of the petition and the severity of the victim’s condition before the Foundation’s intervention. Others have emphasized the need for greater awareness on when and how to seek assistance in similar disputes, especially those involving prolonged illness and alleged spiritual causes.

Some opinion leaders have also called for stronger mediation mechanisms within families and communities to address conflicts early before they escalate into long-term disputes that may affect the health and well-being of those involved. They noted that unresolved family misunderstandings can sometimes contribute to prolonged tension and suspicion among relatives.

Meanwhile, the Duamenefa Foundation has reiterated its commitment to handling such sensitive cases with urgency and care, encouraging community members to make early reports of critical health-related petitions. The Foundation says it will continue to engage stakeholders and traditional authorities in order to promote timely intervention, conflict resolution, and the protection of lives in similar cases.

Mr. Ketaman Emmanuel Evortepe concluded by once again expressing disappointment over the outcome of the petition and the news of the passing of Husunu Dawukpor. He further extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, praying for strength and comfort for them during this difficult time.
