Residents of Adina in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region are mourning the death of a fisherman who reportedly fell ill and died during a fishing expedition on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The incident, which occurred at a local fishing ground, has generated concern within the community due to reports that the deceased had earlier been involved in a disagreement over a fishing location. However, authorities say investigations are ongoing and the exact cause of death has not yet been established.
According to an eyewitness account provided to Fafaa 100.3 FM by Madam Huenyeametor Sedeke, wife of the deceased, she and her husband, Mr. Joshua Amegashi, had gone fishing when another fisherman approached them and objected to the location where her husband was operating.
Madam Sedeke alleged that during the confrontation, the individual expressed displeasure over the use of the fishing spot and later left the scene after a brief exchange.
She stated that shortly afterward, her husband, who was attending to his fishing net in the water, complained of feeling unwell and called for assistance. According to her account, she advised him to leave the water, but he indicated that he was unable to do so.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, she raised an alarm and called for help. Another fisherman eventually responded and assisted in bringing Mr. Amegashi ashore.
He was later confirmed dead, leaving family members, colleagues, and residents shocked by the sudden turn of events.
Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Johnson Agbeko, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the matter has been reported to the Ghana Police Service at Denu. He said investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Meanwhile, the Duamenefa Foundation contacted the individual accused of confronting the deceased and offered him the opportunity to respond to the allegations.
The individual confirmed that he had questioned the deceased about fishing at a location he normally used. He acknowledged that an exchange took place before he left the area.
He further stated that he was later informed by the deceased’s wife that her husband was unwell and that she had requested his assistance. According to him, he declined because he and the deceased were not on speaking terms.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion within Adina and nearby communities, with residents expressing concern over tensions that sometimes arise regarding access to fishing grounds.
Community leaders have called for calm and urged residents to avoid speculation while allowing the police investigation to proceed. They have also emphasized the need for dialogue and conflict-resolution mechanisms to address disputes within the fishing sector.
Family members have described Mr. Joshua Amegashi as a hardworking fisherman who played an important role in supporting his household. Residents and fellow fishermen have extended their condolences to his wife, Madam Huenyeametor Sedeke, and the bereaved family.
The Duamenefa Foundation has indicated that it will continue monitoring developments surrounding the case as investigations progress.
