Students of Dzodze-Penyi Senior High School (DZOSEC) in the Ketu North Municipality have been encouraged to consider journalism as a viable career and a platform for making a positive impact on society.
The call came during an educational and career-development programme organized by the Assemblies of God Students Association (AGSA) on Friday, with the Campus Director of the Fafaa Institute of Media and Professional Studies, an affiliate of ICM-UK, Madam Josephine Fafali Bobobee, serving as the facilitator.
The programme was designed to expose students to the fundamentals of journalism, deepen their understanding of the media profession, and equip them with relevant information to make informed decisions about their future career paths.
Held on the DZOSEC campus, the programme attracted students, members of AGSA, and representatives of the school’s academic and administrative leadership.
Among those who attended were Rev. Governor Awli Theophilus, who represented the Headmistress; Rev. Blessing Agbodeka, District Pastor of the Assemblies of God; Mr. Bokorvi, Senior Housemaster; Pastor Vincent Adukor, Matron; and Rev. Joseph Klutsey, Head Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church, Penyi, among others.
Journalism: More Than Just a Profession
Taking the students through the rudiments of journalism, Madam Bobobee highlighted the critical role journalists play in informing, educating and holding society to account.
Her presentation covered key areas including the meaning and importance of journalism, types of journalism, how to become a journalist, journalistic ethics, journalism in the age of social media, and journalism as both a career and a calling.
The session was highly interactive, with students actively participating, asking questions and sharing their perspectives about the media industry.
Madam Bobobee also emphasized the importance of truth, accuracy, curiosity and professionalism, urging aspiring journalists to develop these qualities from an early stage.
Students Discover New Career Possibilities
For some students, the programme offered more than just academic knowledge—it opened their minds to career possibilities they had not previously considered.
Agyinkwa Ernestina, a participant, disclosed that although she was not initially a member of AGSA, the programme inspired her to join the association.
She said the training had given her valuable knowledge and strengthened her determination to pursue a career in sports journalism.
“I am not part of AGSA, but because of this programme, I joined, and I was able to take something home. Because I like sports, I am going to be a sports journalist,” she said.
Another student, Kpeli Kate, said the programme had helped her understand that curiosity is one of the most important qualities a journalist must possess.
She explained that her passion for asking questions and writing had further motivated her to pursue journalism.
“As a journalist, you have to be curious, and because of the programme, I want to become a journalist. I am good at asking questions and writing,” Kpeli stated.
A Call to Future Journalists
Madam Bobobee urged the students not to allow the knowledge acquired during the programme to end in the classroom.
She encouraged them to begin practising their communication and writing skills, remain curious about events around them, and develop a strong commitment to truth and accuracy.
She further urged students who aspire to enter the media profession to see journalism not merely as a job, but as a responsibility and a calling to serve society.
The programme is expected to contribute to nurturing the next generation of media professionals by exposing young people to the opportunities, responsibilities and ethical demands of journalism.
For many of the students, the experience was not simply an introduction to journalism—it was an opportunity to discover a career path and begin imagining themselves as the journalists of tomorrow.
