Traditional Ruler Alleges Volta Regional House of Chiefs is Responsible for Weta Chieftaincy Dispute

Torgbui Ashiagbor IV, a traditional ruler in the Weta Traditional Area of Ketu North Municipality, has alleged that the ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Weta is being worsened by actions taken by the Regional House of Chiefs. He made the statement during an interaction with Mr. Ketaman Emmanuel Evortepe on the Duamenefa Programme aired on Fafaa 100.3 FM.

According to Torgbui Ashiagbor IV, when the dispute first arose, the case was referred to the Regional House of Chiefs. The House initially passed a judgment instructing the two rival chiefs to work together peacefully while awaiting a final decision on the rightful occupant of the paramount chieftaincy stool.

However, the traditional ruler claimed that tensions escalated when the Regional House of Chiefs issued a gazette recognizing the other chief as the paramount chief of Weta Traditional Area. He said this action created confusion, deepened divisions among the community, and intensified the ongoing dispute.

The dispute has reportedly affected communal activities in Weta, including the annual Morluza Festival, which was celebrated separately by rival factions this year due to disagreements over the chieftaincy. Torgbui Ashiagbor IV expressed concern over the impact of the conflict on the people’s unity and cultural traditions.

Torgbui Ashiagbor IV called on all parties involved to respect traditional protocols and emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation while awaiting a final decision from the Regional House of Chiefs. He appealed for peace and unity among the people of Weta to avoid further community unrest.

The Duamenefa Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting peace and reconciliation in communities, has just begun its formal investigation into the matter. The Foundation urged all parties involved in the Weta chieftaincy dispute to maintain peace, respect the law, and seek legal redress through appropriate channels to ensure a fair and lasting resolution.

The Foundation further emphasized that it will continue to monitor developments closely and mediate where necessary to restore harmony in the Weta Traditional Area. It appealed to both factions to prioritize the development of the community over personal interests and to cooperate fully with lawful authorities while the dispute is being resolved.
