Responding to enquiries from Fafaa FM regarding ongoing investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct involving certain teachers and the interdicted headmaster at Dzodze-Penyi Senior High School, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has reaffirmed that its initial action was the immediate interdiction of the former headmaster pending the outcome of an administrative probe.
According to the Service, the initial step in addressing the allegations involves temporarily removing the accused from duty while the appropriate regional authorities conduct a formal inquiry. GES stated that should the allegations be substantiated by the Regional Disciplinary Committee, the necessary sanctions will be imposed in accordance with established regulations.
GES further clarified that criminal prosecution is a matter between the State and the accused person, typically initiated by the parents or legal guardians of the affected student, rather than by the school itself. The Service explained that in previous cases where schools initiated legal action, proceedings were sometimes discontinued after parents opted for out-of-court settlements.
The Service acknowledged that concerns raised by stakeholders are legitimate, particularly regarding the need to ensure accountability in cases involving serious misconduct.
While reiterating its commitment to addressing and sanctioning individuals found culpable, GES urged the media and the general public to exercise caution in their reportage. The Service emphasized that public disclosures must be handled carefully to prevent unnecessary reputational damage to institutions and, more importantly, to protect the identities and well-being of victims.
GES expressed concern that in recent instances, the circulation of victims’ identities in the public domain has resulted in some affected students discontinuing their education.
The Service described such outcomes as deeply unfortunate and reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding students while ensuring that due process is followed.
